2026-27 tryouts and assessments: what families need to know
Tryouts and assessments for the 2026-27 travel season are Sunday, Oct. 18, and Monday, Oct. 19, at the Falmouth High School field house, 874 Gifford Street. Here is everything we know so far.
Schedule
| Day | Grades 5 and 6, boys and girls | Grades 7 and 8, boys and girls |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday, Oct. 18 | 1:30 to 2:45pm | 2:45 to 4:00pm |
| Monday, Oct. 19 | 6:00 to 7:00pm | 7:00 to 8:00pm |
Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in. Wear basketball sneakers and bring water.
Boys: tryouts
Most boys grades will hold tryouts this year, so every boy should attend one of the two sessions. Teams play in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League, where rosters max out at 15 players. Coaches will evaluate players and make final roster decisions. If a grade has more players than one team can hold, we’re looking into whether a second team is possible, but we can’t promise that yet.
Girls: assessments
For girls, these sessions are an assessment so coaches can meet players and plan teams. Girls teams play in the Old Colony Girls Basketball League. Please come to one session unless your coach tells you otherwise. Girls coaches will reach out to their teams in the coming days and weeks with practice and game schedules.
Who can play
Players must live in Falmouth and play in the grade they’re currently enrolled in. Players can play up a grade but not down. We especially need more 8th graders, boys and girls, so please spread the word.
Fill out the interest form first
If your child hasn’t registered interest yet, please do it before tryouts: Register Interest. If you started the form but didn’t finish it, please complete it so we have your child on the list.
After tryouts
Coaches will contact families once teams are set. Girls rosters are due to the league Oct. 30 and boys rosters Nov. 1. Each player will need a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Falmouth residency such as a report card, and a signed code of conduct and consent form. Players can’t take the court for games until their paperwork is in.
The season
- Practices start in early November, about twice a week for 90 minutes at Mullen Hall and Lawrence School.
- Games start in early December on weekends.
- Boys playoffs run in late January and early February. The girls season runs into March.
- New this year: jerseys with last names on the back and numbered shorts.
Fees and scholarships
Last season’s fee was $280, and we expect this season’s to stay close to that. Cost should never be the reason a child can’t play, so scholarships are available. Reach out to Nate Keith, our treasurer, privately and he’ll take care of you.
A 4th grade boys team?
The Cape Cod Youth Basketball League needs more 4th grade boys teams, and Falmouth has never had one. We’d love to change that this season. If you have a 4th grade boy who wants to play, let us know through our Contact Us page.
Volunteers and fundraising
We’re a volunteer-run club, and we still need a lot of help. Every team needs a parent scorekeeper, who can’t be a coach under league rules, and we also need team managers and helpers for tryouts and home games. We’re fundraising this year to cover uniform costs without raising family fees. If you can help or have a sponsor in mind, please let us know.
Spread the word and stay in touch
